In light of our final year degree show being cancelled, a collective of artists and designers including myself came together to create Impromptu, an online show and sale of LSAD graduate work, in aid of Doras Luimní, a charity which aims to help promote and protect the rights of people from a migrant background in Ireland.
Impromptu was an opportunity to improvise and create something positive during a challenging time. A global climate of uncertainty, protest, and reform motivated us to find solutions to challenges we had never anticipated.
Impromptu was our answer to the shared desire for closure among LSAD 4th years when our final year was suddenly cut short due to COVID-19. We felt that our peers still deserved the opportunity to display and sell their work despite the limitations that the pandemic had caused.
We also wanted to use our creativity to make a difference, so it was agreed that 50% of each sale would be donated to Doras Luimní, a charity which is close to home and aims to help promote and protect the rights of people from a migrant background in Ireland.
Themes of adaptability, metamorphosis, and growth were the main inspirations - the visual language is rooted in nature, and change as a constant. The colour palette and textures are inspired by a vision of a new world. The typeface is a version of Phase by Elias Hanzer, which represents the unpredictable nature of the situation that Impromptu was born out of.
Impromptu was an extremely enjoyable project to work on that I will always be very proud of. Silver lining.
